Tequila Sundown

Some mornings you already know that it’s going to be the kind of day that deserves a cocktail.  For example, if you get ready to leave for work 45 minutes earlier than usual on a Monday morning, but then you slip and fall on ice on your way to start up your car.  Then, once you clean yourself up, you realize that one of your tires is almost flat, but you think, “That’s okay, there’s a gas station around the corner and I’ll still be early.”  Lo and behold, that gas station’s air pump broke last night.  The next gas station doesn’t have an air pump at all.  The third gas station you visit has duct tape covering the coin slot for the air, and you find out that it doesn’t work, either.  The fourth gas station you visit has a 4 car line waiting for air, and by the time you fill your tire, you’re 15 minutes late to work.  You know, something that may or may not be exactly what my morning looked like today.
Mondays are always rough, aren’t they?  And it’s only 10AM.

Tequila Sundown: tequila, orange juice, and pomegranate juice come together in this tasty cocktail!

I mean, really, my morning wasn’t that bad.  I didn’t get hurt from slipping on the ice and I made it to work OK without any tires exploding on the highway or anything of that nature (and I know from experience how much that situation makes you need a strong cocktail).  So, all things considered, I shouldn’t be complaining.
But I don’t need a disaster to crave a Tequila Sundown, so you can bet that I’ll be mixing one of these up tonight after work anyway.
Tequila Sundown: tequila, vodka, and pomegranate juice come together in this tasty cocktail!
I found out about the Tequila Sundown after reading this post on Manu’s Menu.  I decided to tweak the recipe to include grenadine (one of the ingredients in the popular Tequila Sunrise cocktail) so you could still have that pretty gradient of color in this pomegranate-pumped version.  All of the flavors come together wonderfully, and I hope you give it a try to soothe your Monday blues, or at your next get-together!

Tequila Sundown
Prep time
Total time
Serves: 1
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • 2 oz tequila
  • 2 oz pomegranate juice
  • ½ oz grenadine
  • Orange wedge, to garnish
  • Pomegranate seeds, to garnish
  1. Combine the orange juice and tequila in a glass with a few ice cubes.
  2. Slowly pour in the pomegranate juice down the inside of the glass.
  3. Pour in the grenadine, again down the inside of the glass.
  4. The grenadine and pomegranate juice should create a dark purplish red to orange gradient. Garnish the cocktail with an orange wedge and a few pomegranate seeds and serve.
